WWF Statement on Colorado EPR Legislation

Today, Colorado Governor, Jared Polis signed a bill into law that establishes Extended Producer Responsibility for plastic and packaging materials. The law will hold producers of packaging financially responsible for their recycling, incentivize a reduction in the amount of materials used, ensure that the recycling system receives the funding and investment it needs, and prevent plastic from leaking in to nature.

In response, WWF issued the following statement from Alejandro Pérez, senior vice president, policy and government affairs:

“By matching effective waste management practices with accountability, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is an essential tool to address plastic pollution. We have a lot of work to do to achieve a waste-free future, but we are one step further because of Colorado’s actions. The state is setting an example of how industry, environmentalists and policymakers can join forces to transform the way we use, reuse and recycle materials.”
